The key idea is that satellite communications gear needs a clear, unobstructed view of the satellite to work reliably, so it’s placed in a part of the airframe that has a good line of sight and is still accessible for maintenance. The INMARSAT HSD-440 terminal is installed in the aft upper lobe panel for exactly that reason: it sits high and toward the rear of the aircraft, giving a clear view above the fuselage and away from the cockpit and passenger areas, while allowing easy routing of cables to the exterior antenna and internal equipment.

Putting a satcom terminal in the nose radome would conflict with other systems that occupy that space (like weather radar) and isn’t typical for line-of-sight reasons. A cockpit overhead panel would place the equipment inside the crew area, complicating maintenance and risking interference or heat exposure. A radome on top of the vertical stabilizer could face structural and interference issues and isn’t the conventional, serviceable location for this kind of terminal. Therefore, the aft upper lobe panel best fits the operational and maintenance needs of an INMARSAT HSD-440 installation.
